L’explosion technologique amorcée au début du siècle passé a métamorphosé notre quotidien en le peuplant de nouveaux moyens de perceptions et d’actions dans notre environnement. Les technologies de l‘information sont probablement les apports les plus importants. Le projet e-Babel est un projet qui a pour objectif de pérenniser les équipements, les logiciels et les données indépendamment des technologies les sous-tendant. eBabel est une architecture donnant l’accès à des ressources numériques du passé et de permettre de les utiliser avec les moyens présents. The term progress comes from the Latin word progressus meaning "action to move forward." Each discipline has its own reading of what is the progress and where it may lead us – like philosophy, history, anthropology, etc. Progress as ideology has developed in the nineteenth century, together with the process of industrialization. Progress has been likened to science and growth. It was measured by indicators of economic performance, such as GDP, the main indicator of the performance of nations.

Today, many aspects of growth-progress are problematic. Looking beyond the crisis, many politicians and business leaders are now aware - and say it openly - that the references of the past cannot serve for the future. Whole areas of economic and financial system will be modified in depth. The system of consumption that has fuelled the growth of the West, destroying the environment, is not extensible. In less than twenty years, oil production has significantly declined. Young people today have the certainty that they will live less well than their parents. All signals are in the red!

La récente introduction de l’informatique dans le cursus des gymnases (sous la forme d’un cours à option) relance la question de la place de l’informatique et des TIC dans l’éducation en Suisse. D’aucuns avancent que l’informatique devrait avoir sa place en tant que discipline spécifique devant dispenser un savoir à tous les échelons de la formation. Alors que d’autres voient plutôt l’informatique comme un outil prenant la forme d’un ordinateur dont l’usage doit s’intégrer au sein des disciplines existantes.
