The future of education in a post PC era

As we talk about the relationship between education electronic tools and communication, it is interesting to see the latest Forrester report about the Post PC Era (http://bit.ly/m2uuBY). It points to four characteristics of this new "era". We would do well to ask ourselves what these trends mean to education or rather learning.

Here are the four characteristics:

Stationary to ubiquitous. Anytime, anywhere, breaking down many of the barriers that surround much institutionalized education. As the report points out, the Post PC is more context aware and consequently more connected to its environment, contrasting with schooling that attempts to isolate the learner from his or her environment...

Formal to casual. Instant availability. Always on. No ritualized periods for learning. In corridor. Between two doors. Outside. On the move. Without formality or procedure. When it's needed.

Arms-length to intimate. No longer a formal tool but an extension of self. This intimacy contrasts with the formal, arms-distance of institutionalized education.

Abstracted to physical. Movement has been banished from schooling. Just eyes to look, ears to listen and fingers to write. All this is changing. Movement becomes a significant form of input. As does voice.
